Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV): Causes, Symptoms, and Diagnosis

Human Metapneumovirus (HMPV) is a respiratory virus that can cause infections in people of all ages, particularly young children, older adults, and individuals with weakened immune systems. First identified in 2001, HMPV spreads through respiratory droplets released when an infected person coughs or sneezes. The virus primarily affects the respiratory tract and can lead to illnesses ranging from mild cold-like symptoms to more serious lung infections.

Common symptoms of HMPV include cough, fever, runny or blocked nose, sore throat, and shortness of breath. In some cases, especially among vulnerable individuals, the infection can progress to bronchitis or pneumonia. Because the symptoms are similar to other respiratory infections such as the flu or RSV, it can be difficult to identify HMPV without proper medical testing.

Diagnosis of HMPV usually involves laboratory tests such as PCR testing or respiratory sample analysis to detect the virus. While there is currently no specific antiviral treatment for HMPV, most cases are managed with supportive care, including rest, hydration, and medications to relieve symptoms. Early diagnosis and proper medical attention can help manage the infection effectively and prevent complications, especially in high-risk individuals.
